This is the tale of Gudrun, a völva, who lives in a time of piercing cold. She learns of the impending Fimbulvetr to come before Ragnarök. Although she first seeks to stop the long winter, she eventually sees the futility of such an endeavour as even the gods cannot fight the inevitable. However, she understands that from an end a new beginning will spring forth and hope will be renewed. She falls into a frozen slumber amidst the bitter cold of Fimbulvetr to rest forever in ice.
