High Desert Hymns is the fourth full length release from gothic americana rockers Palodine. The duo has relocated from Seattle Wa. to the middle of the American west and have been heavily influenced by the surroundings in which they now live. Themes of hypocrisy, enlightenment, violence, spirits, redemption and death still permeate, while short story narratives laden with desert imagery are introduced. The songs are lush and inventive, while somehow remaining rustic and aged. There is a dark, folk -noir aspect that is ever present. The record has bite and confidence, but also hearkens back to another time and washes over the listener with a layered beauty and melancholy sophistication. .............................................................................. Palodine knows how to produce an album and the new album is no exception. Their trademark is a full-bodied soundscape with many instruments, care in details and entirety. The new album stands up well in comparison with their previous albums. One of the hardest bands in the gothic americana genre- Konztroll, Swedish Embassy of Gothic Country A stunning wall-to-wall masterpiece of American music. For all of their intensity and darkness, ultimately the band mines beauty and redemption, pulling the best of American music through a sluice box filled with post-punk, gothic, appalachian bluegrass, shoegaze, alt-country, etc. Katrina Whitney sings with a slow burning intensity that sounds like she is holding back a parallel universe through sheer willpower. It is fascinating, frightening, cathartic, and most of all it is damn compelling. Michael Aryn is one of my favorite guitar (and bass, banjo, mandolin, among others) players on the planet, regardless of genre. His playing may not be the stuff pubescent boys watch over and over on Youtube attempting to imitate, but I don't think it is hyperbole to say he is a uniquely brilliant instrumentalist and is particularly a savant at creating a layered, almost cinematic atmosphere. Oh, btw, they both happen to actually be really nice people, too. But they are artists, with a brand of art that is particularly personal. Palodine is a 100% DIY band, from engineering & mixing to cover art and everything in between. They are not mass-market cash cows for the entertainment industry.-Brandon MeyersExpand
