Almost from Day One, this project was a miserable nightmare to work on. It was fraught with plans falling through at critical junctures and delayed endlessly by other jobs, snowstorms on the only day to do a recording session, and writer’s block galore… and because of those things, I think the work excelled. An abundance of frustration breeds heavy music. It has always been a tenet of mine to make music that is, above all, as heavy as is either appropriate, or possible, given a certain situation. There are many who don’t share this viewpoint, but nothing could be farther from mattering. Music in general shouldn’t be about bending to the criticisms of the listener. It is, and always will be, about finding your own voice or style, and rolling with it, for better or for worse.
In the summer of 2016, Sound Struggle was effectively disbanded (even though we never made a conscious decision to do so). With a few songs already written for this album, as well as art concepts devised, and narrative dreamt of, I decided it would be a shame not to finish the path that had been embarked upon, pull a Bo Burnham, and take about six years to let this work become what it wanted to be.
This album, while Dickensian in length, has turned out very much as I had envisioned, and to me is a manifestation of the knowledge gained over the evolution of this band’s work. With that in mind, perhaps one day Sound Struggle could be considered for a “Most Improved” trophy. In the meantime, I am hoping that this album was worth the wait for you if you are a fan, and if you weren’t previously a fan, good luck making it through the run time!
Now that we have reached this moment, I must say that while this isn’t for certain the end, there will in all likelihood not be another work released under the moniker Sound Struggle. Now is the time to do other projects, and let you enjoy these songs I have slaved over for years to bring you. I am endlessly thankful to all members, past and present, of Sound Struggle, for struggling along with me, and also to honorary members who helped this work get across the finish line.
Thank God that’s over.
Yours truly,
Cameron Rasmussen
