In the summer of 2021, things should have been getting better. We'd recruited a dedicated bassist for the first time since 2018, the pandemic was abating a bit, and local bands were beginning to guiltlessly play shows again. Yet we were still stuck- scant songwriting, few rehearsal opportunities, no momentum. In that season, we managed scattered sessions, one acoustic gig and a backyard show before parting ways again for the school year. By winter of 2021, we were ready. Knowing we would have a functional trio lineup together for the holiday break, we planned ahead to make the most of the time. A vague plan to record grew into six songs. Racing against the weeks, Will Stephens at the familiar TheLab45 got our takes down quickly and had time to polish our production. With a show or two lined up for the reunion, we could slot the new material into setlists. Even before the material now in the other EPs went out, we were diving into promoting these songs while they were fresh. But enough lore. What about the music? This EP isn't long- but it is wide. This release finds us pushing at the frontiers of what ASND can sound like. Alongside the usual hallmarks of crisply folded riffs and fuzzy sheets of guitar, songs include ebow, synths, drum machines, and even ukulele. New ideas meant new methods of working, garnering exciting results. Latest member Sunny Scabora's bass work finally features on tape, adding a new perspective to the low end. The release even finds space for a songwriting contribution by Scabora, bringing multiple writing voices to ASND once again. But it's not all newness. The tracks here fit well within the ASND "brand" of moody alt-rock molded into presentable pop. There are guitars; they often get loud. Jack Croce is still a phenomenal drummer who knows how to give a song the right spine, even when riding atop a drum machine loop. The lyrics wield the same sharp wit (read: groan-inducing metaphors) as our loveable classics. Working together, we handle some new ideas- and settle some old ones- into their best home here. If you're a fan of our output, we think you'll really like this, and if we've just come onto your radar, we hope this reaches you where you're at.Expand
