A few years ago at the MBOTMA Summer Festival, most of the musicians playing on this album gathered at AJ and Rina’s campsite at the end of the day on Friday and Saturday night to catch up, share some food and drink, and play some tunes. What ensued was a highly enthusiastic beer- and bacon-infused jam session that started late in the evening and lasted until the wee hours of the morning both nights. People dropped in, played and went, but at the beginning and end of the evening on both nights, it was AJ, Chirps, Rina, Jim, and David holding down the fort and having a great time. Throughout the sessions, Chirps pulled out some really great tunes, including some that he had written and not yet recorded. Before we all went our separate ways that weekend, AJ mentioned that maybe this group ought to get together and record some of those tunes, and thus the seed was planted that resulted in the CD you have in your hand. By the time the five of us gathered together in early 2024, we had recruited Dedo on piano, adding to the already formidable rhythm section. Unlike the late-night no holds barred jam sessions a couple years earlier that inspired this recording, we approached these sessions with a little more discipline and did most of our playing during the middle of the day, but managed to have a heck of a good time nonetheless. The music flowed without effort and jelled from the very start. The arrangements - such as they are - were created on the spot. The same goes for AJ’s soaring harmony fiddle parts. The tunes themselves were mostly chosen at random from Chirps’ and AJ’s impressive storehouse of tunes and have origins at both ends of the Mississippi, from Wisconsin to central & Southern Illinois, Arkansas, and Mississippi, and along the Nebraska/ Iowa/Missouri borders. Some of the tunes are Chirps' original compositions. Several of the pieces here are quite popular throughout the Midwest and beyond, due, in part, to their inclusion in R.P. Christeson’s highly influential tune book, The Old Time Fiddler's Repertory. Swamper’s Revenge proudly presents, for your listening and dancing pleasure – Kettle Bog.Expand
