*** BOOMKAT PRODUCT REVIEW *** Heat Crimes are not messing about with CLF’s 12 hour payload of budget Greek X-Files OST-meets-unorthodox ecclesiastic styles, following a breadcrumb trail of clues that leads back to the hallowed Live Adult Entertainment and an oracle-like figure from Thessaloniki - a big one for cult acolytes of James Ferraro, Spencer Clarke, Christos Chondropoulos, László Hortobágyi. The Christian Love Forum trio exhaustively expound on a sound variously regarded as devotional keyboard jams, Byzantine hillbilly trance, or H-popocrypha, across 12 hours likely to grant access to one’s own personal heaven upon completion. By any measure it’s the longest from CLF or Heat Crimes, pushing the boat out into Aegean and Mediterranean waters criss-crossed over millennia by southern European, Arabic, North African and Ottoman civilisations who’ve all left traces of their stories in the mix. The longform jams of ‘Greatest Hits’ sees CLF drink deeply from this font of knowledge and instrumentally translate entwined sagas with a properly zoned-in/out appeal idealised for endless road trips and deep bong rituals. Microtonal mid-eastern keyboard melodies and dread-filled fanfares lead the way on martial rhythms, sometimes trudging, sometimes trenchant, but always marching forth with an hypnotic conviction in their world-building nous. As we witnessed at their Berlin Atonal opening set of ’23, the triumvirate are likely to swap roles at will during the sermon, proving equally adept at hustling the rhythm programming or harmonic counterpoints around a lead figure. One could be assured in guessing that’s the vibe here, with N*X, Kiro, and Scott variously invoking the spirits of Gurdjieff, Mark Snow, Badalamenti and Islam Chipsy in their shared palette of pitch-slapped vamps and crepuscular pads. Yes, that does appear to be a riff on the Twin Peaks theme, just over an hour in, and more intrepid ears will be mesmerised by passages of sultriest jazz, like Pekka Airaksinen in Egypt, or widescreen beatless panoramas, sometime going on over 30 mins, as is their wont, leading to rawest Arab Acid gold in the 3d tape, or emulsified maraganat and romantic Roma emulations in the 4th.
