“Welcome…” the debut EP from Los Angeles eclectic indie-pop duo Wet World has arrived, dripping with the kind of joyful exuberance and unpretentious freedom that only two real-life friends could bring to their music. Vocalist/drummer Steph Barker and producer/vocalist Luke Atlas met via a Craigslist of all places when Steph drummed with Luke’s previous band. After several years of hanging out and making songs together on the side (with Steph finding the power to sing lead for the first time ever), the pair finally released their first song as Wet World in February 2023. All their songs and videos thus far have been self-produced or collaborations with friends, keeping a scrappy DIY spirit throughout. The songs on “Welcome…” bounce between genres as the two chase their bliss, from danceable bangers like “Wassup” and “Volcano” to rockers like the pop-punk crush-fest “Wet Like Summer,” and doomed-queer love anthem “Ready 4 the Letdown.” An EP-release show and video premiere for “Universal Child,” took place on 8/2 at El Cid in Silver Lake.
