What it's like when your ghosts start singing
Ghosts Are Speaking is a suite of improvised works recorded during a stormy week spent in a cottage on a remote and beautiful part of the east coast of Lutruwita/Tasmania, at Lisdillon. Some of my ancestors came to that place 168 years beforehand when they were shipped out to work the land by a rich landholder, John MitchelI. I looked for them in the environment and in the stones of the remaining buildings. I found myself creating a sonic landscape inspired by their stories, my own story, the wild weather and that windswept place.
What would it have been like to be isolated during a wild storm in this stolen land back then? Where was little Grace buried after she died not long after they arrived? Why did my great great great grandmother come out on the ship by herself at the age of 21? Where were they in Sarah Mitchell’s drawings of the estate? Could they have imagined their wedding would create lines of DNA into the 21st century full of adventure, fears, “long faces” and “grey expressions”?
These improvisations use an electric piano, a synthesiser and field recordings of birds, blow flies, scratching metal, wind and waves. You’ll hear some raw moments. My hope is that, as you listen to this album, you will feel a sense of that special place and of ghosts speaking.
