Tina Leon’s debut EP “Push” is a soulful blend of R&B, gospel, pop, and jazz influences. The Montreal-based singer merges her vocal talents with a sensibility for shared human experiences. Leon’s music acts as a space to delve deeper into questions that many of us ask ourselves: “Are we settling?”, “Is it too late?”, “Can we be happy again?” Through her exploration of these challenging questions, Leon encounters moments of revelation, which she uses to ground her music in an honest, and relatable message.
In the track “I should be enough”, Leon expresses the difficulties two people may face when they come together in a relationship, trying to understand one another. The singer grapples with the tension that builds when love, and affection, are met with mistreatment. Accentuated by dramatic piano, Leon cuts into a self-affirming chorus, reminding herself, and the listener, “Yes, I am enough”. A thriving dance rhythm supports her message, while the tension introduced through the verses find relief. Leon’s free spirited style of singing brings an air of improvisation. She allows room for her voice to explore various melodies—a quality that arises throughout the EP.
Leon offers herself to her listener in an effort to help those going through similar experiences. In some instances she passed through these trials, now expressing words of encouragement. Although these moments are recalled, Leon doesn’t remove herself from the original struggle. In the song “Battle”, she places her attention on various forms of internal conflict. The “demons” that many of us encounter in our own lives. Through this acknowledgement, the song plays to soothe these tensions. Electric piano shimmers as she sings, inviting a lighter perspective.
The closing song opens with an ethereal R&B tone, introducing spirited rhythms that turn a sad goodbye into a compassionate farewell. “Erase” finds alignment with the recurring themes that connect each song on the EP: How do we handle difficulties and disappointments we experience in life? Can something positive emerge from these challenges? Leon leaves us with an open ending that inspires empathy: “If you ever need, you can always count on me”.
