Private Eye VR

It’s been a few months since the release of the Arctic Awakening soundtrack album, and with my head still deep in the soundtrack-verse, I recently found myself reviewing an archived project, Private Eye VR, a game for which I wasn’t able to release a soundtrack album. With a bit more time on my hands lately, however, I decided it was finally the right moment to set things straight and share the music—albeit very belatedly.
Here’s a little context:
Private Eye VR began as an entry in Facebook's Oculus VR jam, where it finished as a finalist. The game received much attention from early adopters of VR and laid the groundwork for a more ambitious title to evolve.
Its signature spying mechanic—piecing together a crime by gathering intelligence on neighbours through a pair of binoculars—earned widespread praise, as did its innovative locomotion system that seats players in a wheelchair.
The brilliant voyeuristic gameplay and its unique approach to VR gameplay mechanics that highlight disability attracted funding from Welcome (formerly The Wellcome Trust) and the UK Games Fund.
Back to the Soundtrack...
The music on this album is steeped in classic film noir, drawing inspiration from Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, and David Shire. It reflects many iterations of Private Eye: compositions from different builds and concepts spanning many years of work.
Pulling this record together has at times been rather like piecing together a jigsaw, trying to figure out how all the musical pieces fit together to make a satisfying whole. It’s been a fascinating journey, and I’ve found many surprises along the way, such as the brilliant piano solo Matt Baber played on A Long Ride Home.
It’s Jazz, baby, well, some of the time, and I hope you enjoy it!
