Glass Echoes is the Minneapolis duo of Chris Bartels and Ben Noble.
In the midst of exploring a variety of musical styles together, Glass Echoes organically turned into the flagship collaboration between Minneapolis-based songwriters Ben Noble and Chris Bartels. With no regard for sonic boundaries, it became a full creative expression for both of them. Each song, rich in layers, has a unique and experimental character, while still embracing a melodic, familiar tone.
The creative process for their debut album, Breathe, was a growing sonic experiment of layered sounds and melodies. In particular, when it came to vocals, each song - each section, in fact - would be sent back and forth between them, and they'd then take turns layering over harmonies, chopped vocal samples, reversing, printing onto analog tape and slowing the reel-to-reel speed down, drenching in effects, on and on - there were no rules.
This mentality also applied to the instrumentation and production. There are banjos used as percussion, cassette tape loops, random bits of noise and field recordings, analog synthesizer improvisations, looped iPhone recordings of roomy pianos, mid-century out-of-tune chord organs, saxophone atmospheres, and so many more unexpected layers - all living in harmony amongst the layers of melody and rhythm.
